Travel Advice Vol. 1: For Business

Almost 40% of all business trips are about two days long.  That means that you shouldn’t need to take up much space with just a couple of days worth of clothing. Although some trips are longer, you are still pressed to be mobile, be able to move quickly, be self-sufficient, and not spend a lot of time waiting at baggage claim for your bag (because it was too large to fit in the overhead compartment). You’ve got a meeting scheduled 1 hour after your flight lands and your last meeting ends 2 hours before you have be at the airport. Who has time to be lugging around a suitcase large enough to fit a body in?

Business trips usually require packing for convenience. But you don’t have to sacrifice style for convenience. Instead create outfits with with interchangeable tops or wear dresses.  Mix and match pieces will be key in order to cut down on the size/number of your bags. Dresses are my preference.

Climates of buildings may vary. And nothing is worse than being cold, away from home, with nothing to drape around your arms.  You’ll be most comfortable with thin layers if you’ll be spending most of your time indoors.

Business travel may also require you to consider the dress code of  your destination.  It may be a bit more formal or casual than you dress where you typically work.  Another thing to consider is the distance you will be walking during the day (especially your travel days in the airports).  This will determine what types of shoes you pack.

Business or pleasure, I always have my toiletry bag packed with travel sized items at the ready so I never forget them. The hotel may have something to tide you over but it’s never enough.

What is the weather at your destination?

Just because it is hot where you live does not mean that the weather is the same at your destination.  Check the weather for the season you will be travelling to, and then as you approach your travel dates, check the 10 day forecast.  Always be prepared for it be warmer by bringing a couple of sleeveless dresses in the case of summertime.  And be prepared for it to be cooler by also packing a light jacket and a light sweater.  Finally, always, always, always bring an umbrella (unless you're travelling to Southern California or Las Vegas).

How long is your trip?

Longer trips may require some creativity:

  • Ship some of your items ahead of you (I have done this with a winter coat)

  • Purchase health and beauty aids when you get there

  • Ship some items back (this is cheaper than paying for a second bag with most airlines)

  • Roll your clothes instead of folding

  • Mix and match clothing items

Will there be an opportunity to shop on your trip?

This question comes from the perpetual shopper in me.  As a general practice, I leave a bit of room in my suitcase (about the size of a shoe box or two).  I am sure you know where I am going with this...

Every city I visit, I locate the closest DSW (you can choose any store).  I visit the clearance section for shoes for me or my family.  I am not recommending that you purchase a pair of shoes whenever you travel.  But clearance sections will always vary from store to store because markets are different across the U.S.  So you are bound to find something in that store that you will not find on their website or in the store close to you.

Just some tips from me to you.
